Ramesh was a typical village boy, shy in nature, mingling with people around, especially with highly educated people in city environment, was his least enjoyable activity. Though, he never stood second in his village in every possible competition, he participated in. But there was something that held him back. He wasn’t very much sure about his ability to speak well in front of a group of English speaking people.

Growing up as a kid, in western Rajasthan, it was a dream of his to work in a corporate environment where he is dealing with foreigners. But his lack of command in the language he wanted to communicate was holding him back from achieving something big which he dreamt as a teenager. He could have easily given up the desire to become a corporate professional but it’s not his nature. He is a determined fellow who would fight till the end. It’s been the case through-out his life and he is not willing to compromise it either.

He decided to work on his English credentials by visiting tourist places around to enable the environment where he could be in touch with foreigners, basically aligning himself against the knowledgeable people. He practiced this routine vigorously for almost a year. He would go there every day, looking for English speaking people who are genuinely interested in talking various aspects of culture to foster his knowledge and strengthen his resolve towards improving his English speaking skills.
His hard work has paid off as he enjoys a fulfilling life, after becoming a guide for foreigners. Not only he is enjoying his life as a guide but also he is living his childhood dream of finding an English girl to marry and visiting the world around.

The language has done a world of good for him, Hasn’t it?

On a glorious July evening, in the year 2011, I was practising my commentary routines, just outside the RCA Academy in Jaipur. with gentle breeze blowing across the RCA academy stands, birds chirping, pink skies and the bright orange sun dropping down over the desert of Rajasthan. It was a tranquil place to be in…. a meditative experience for a practitioner.

The surroundings induced me into that meditative state of mind, as I slipped into meditation, I developed that strong urge of visiting a blind hostel and entertaining the specially abled students through my commentary on India v/s England test match.

As I was about to finish my meditation session, my phone rang and I picked up the phone to see who is calling and I found Mr. Bhairo Singh on the line, who runs an NGO in Jodhpur which is my home town. He called me to inform that they were hosting a cricket match for specially abled children to make them active, fit, and experience the feeling of competing and winning.

And he wanted me to provide on ground running commentary of the match so that the players understand the exact moment, and direct some of the blind students about their positioning in the field.

There was no way I could have said no,as I was delighted with the opportunity to entertain them.

While travelling by a train, I was contemplating how to go about because I had to make some mental adjustments to deliver the commentary in different manner so that it suits their requirements.

As I reached Sucheta niketan senior secondary school in Manaklao, which is located on the outskirts of Jodhpur city, I found some blind children practising ever so seriously. I was awestruck with the way they were practising their skills with their coaches. Later I was told by one of them about their willingness to make their parents proud of them.

The hostel was very well decorated. There were some astonishing paintings on display, exploring the inner desires of those children to compete and win. It was a theatrical experience, witnessing the surroundings and the possibility of what was to come.

As the game started, every seat in that mini stadium was taken by the parents and relatives of those children and the villagers started flocking in to the venue. It was a jam packed stadium. Some people were sitting on hostel roof tops, some of them were sitting in the big neem trees. As the evening progressed, with the floodlight on it became a carnival atmosphere at the sporting venue in manaklao.

Team A scored 156 runs in their alloted 15 overs. Madhusudan top scored with 57 off 22 balls and Ravi kishan picked up 4 wickets.

In reply, the team B started on a disastrous note as their both the openers were back in the dug-out with the score card reading 12 runs after 3 overs.

Hardyal and Raju steadied the ship, by stitching  together a much needed partnership for their team.

The target came down to 65 from 24 balls with Ravi kishan who picked up 4 wickets while bowling, at the crease, batting on 43.

His parents, who are farmer by profession, came all the way from Jaisalmer to witness their son perform, praying for their son to succeed as I painted this word picture he launched the next two balls into the stands to bring up his half century and enliven the hope of winning the game for their team as his parents were jumping and dancing with the specially abled children in happiness and joy.

They needed 3 off the final delivery with last pair on the ground. Luckily the team B had Ravi kishan on strike, batting on 95 to hit the winning runs. The bowler was stopped twice on his delivery stride because of the noise but the crowd continued to make noise. The bowler dropped it short intelligently but Ravikishan had a mighty swing at it he top edged it. It went flying over the wicket keepers head for a six. As I announced the shot in the commentary. Ravi kishan jumped in delight to celebrate his hundred and team’s win ..his parents were smiling with tears rolling down their cheeks, his colleagues were sprinting to the ground to congratulate their hero and celebrate the win. The crowd followed the suit. Ravi kishan was carried on their shoulders.

The energy and emotions on the ground were on par of India, winning the world cup at the wankhede stadium after 28 years of pain, disappointments and anguish

the presentation ceremony followed. Ravi kishan was given the man of the match award for his brilliant show with the bat, a scintillating, a match winning hundred and 4 wickets with the ball.

The big moment for me came when both the captain presented me with that thanks giving note. The feeling cannot be described in words.. it was a priceless moment in my life.
